E8 initiative aims to eliminate malaria in the SADC

Earlier this month in Windhoek, Namibia, Ministers of Health in the SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) countries launched “E8″ a cross-border partnership to eliminate malaria.

Roll Back Malaria

The Angolan government announced this week that they are joining with the World Health Organisation, the World Bank, Unicef, the Japanese Cooperation and others to spend $US 150 million on the fight against malaria in Angola. The amount will be spread over five years as part of the Roll Back Malaria programme.

Zambezi River expedition launches today

The expedition will start at Cazombo locality, Angola’s eastern Moxico province. The Angolan Government and the Programme to Combat to Malaria is heading up Angola’s medical representatives and transport. The timeline for the 2,500 kilometres (1,600 miles) journey is:

US Ambassador pledges $18 million a year to fight malaria

Amidst President George Bush’s recent five country African tour last week, Angola’s US Ambassador, Dan Mozena, announced the US is pledging $USD 18 million to fight against malaria in Angola until 2011. The funds are earmarked for health education and mosquito-net distribution.
