Today is World Malaria Day 2008. To mark the event in Angola, health officials and UN officials are in Luena City, in eastern Moxico Province, to “inaugurate a fair of products and medicines to fight malaria, as well as launch the campaign of insecticide spraying inside houses in the Sacassange village (14 kilometres south of Luena City)”, according to the Angola Press Agency. Today, Angola’s Health Minister also announced the government’s plans to reduce the malaria mortality rate from 30,000 (recorded in 2003) to less than 8,000 this year. 2000 deaths caused by malaria have been recorded this year. The Minister said mortality rates have dropped in 2008 and pointed to malaria prevention awareness campaigns using mosquito nets as contributing to the decline. The Roll Back Malaria consortium organized the Zambezi Expedition to highlight the World Malaria Day’s year long slogan: ‘Malaria- a disease without borders’. We’ve been following its progress- particularly as the expedition launched from Angola’s Moxico province three weeks ago. Today the expedition arrived in Livingstone, Zambia. The expedition is the first stage in the RBM calls a regional malaria control initiative – the “Trans-Zambezi project”. The RBM says the project will boost health, tourism and economic development in the Trans-Zambezi region. More here: http://www.zambezi-expedition.org/

The Angolan government announced this week that they are joining with the World Health Organisation, the World Bank, Unicef, the Japanese Cooperation and others to spend $US 150 million on the fight against malaria in Angola. The amount will be spread over five years as part of the Roll Back Malaria programme.
And speaking of the RBI, Angola’s Health deputy minister, José Van-Dunem and a delegation of government official attended last week’s Zambezi River launch in Moxico province. According to AllAfrica.com, the minister stated that Angola’s malaria death rates have dropped significantly compared to previous years due to malaria prevention strategies including the supply of mosquito nets, medicines and eliminating stagnant water area. The Angola Mosquitonet Project has exceeded the $100,000 mark thanks to a private donation of $1,500 received from a ‘Tullow Dublin Family’. This donation means we can purchase more nets and now include in our distribution the province of Cunene in the southern part of Angola. A group of 30 trained local maternal health care givers who help women in rural areas with pre and post natal care, will receive mosquito nets to distribute to the mothers as part of their health care training. In Angola, 25% of overall maternal mortality is attributed to malaria. The health care givers are part of a program run by the Lutheran Church in Angola.
Our new total is $101,457.00. A big thank you to each and everyone who has helped us exceed our previous goal. We are well on the way to the December 2008 goal of $125,000.

April is a big month for the Angola MosquitoNet Project. It’s the month that we’ll be handing over nets… On April 30, we will be giving away 3,160 nets to various organizations including Development Workshop, the Soyo Baptist Church Medical Clinic and the Palanca Negra Project in Malange, to mention just a few.
The Angola MosquitoNet Project has now raised $99,957. That’s just $43 short of the $100,000 goal set for December 2007. We are actively fundraising and hope to reach our goal for this year, $125,000 by December 2008. Contact the Angola MosquitoNet Project here if you:

Angola will be the starting point for the two-month long Roll Back Malaria Zambezi Expedition, which begins on March 29. At a press conference in Luanda today, organizers announced that the expedition will depart from Cazombo, in Angola’s eastern province of Moxico. Using inflatable boats, the expedition team of medics and journalists will travel 2,500 kilometres (1,550 miles) along the Zambezi through Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Along the way, the team will distribute mosquito nets and medicine and carry out insecticide spraying. The Roll Back Malaria website says the project “will demonstrate that only a coordinated cross-border action can force the disease to recoil and turn the lifeline of southern Africa into a “River of Life” for those threatened by malaria”.

Welcome to the Angola MosquitoNet Project Blog. Malaria, a preventable and treatable disease, is the leading cause of death in Angola and all of Africa. And mosquito nets are the the first line of defense. The Angola Mosquito Net Project has raised over $90,000 since 2000 from individuals, groups and corporations in Angola and overseas. By the end of 2008, we want to reach the $100, 000 mark, which is 12, 000 family size nets. We appreciate your support!
